CactiExchange - Hosted Tools for the Cacti Community

CactiExchange is a resource for Cacti users that provides tools and information.  The tools on this site are Hosted on this site.

CactiExchange was created to allow the Cacti community to use our homegrown tools that we developed for our internal use. The purpose was to give back to the Cacti community in our own way. So far, we have developed 2 useful tools that we are making available right now. One of the tools helps to create an XML file specific to Cacti and either Script Data Queries or SNMP Data Queries. The second tool is a Perl script generator. We were excited at the idea of using external scripts with Cacti, but we had no idea how to create them. Now we have a tool that does that.

Here are the Cacti related tools that we have published:

  1. CactiPerl - Single OID
  2. CactiPerl - Indexed OID (For use with Data Templates, i.e., uses commandline parameters such as index, query, get)
  3. CactiPerl - Multiple OIDs (For use with Data Input Methods)
  4. CactiXML - Generate Cacti-compatible XML files for Script Data Queries
  5. CactiXML - Generate Cacti-compatible XML files for SNMP Data Queries
  6. Search for OIDs or OID Names (not limited to a vendor or RFC MIBs. These are for every OID that someone can find and enter in the database)

Another feature we have implemented is a lookup database that provides a OID Name-to-OID lookup for any MIB. We will contribute to this database and we also allow users to contribute if they want. This database is also used by the CactiPerl script generator to lookup names and convert them to OIDs as it creates the Perl script. The goal is to make the Cacti user's life as simple as possible with these tools.

Our goal for CactiExchange is to provide a supplemental resource for Cacti users. We plan on adding some information to the site that explains a lot of the WHYs and HOWs relating to Cacti. The Cacti Docs are really very good at stepping through how to do things. What we want to add is more information to describe why something is done a certain way and what you should expect to see and not see when you do certain things within Cacti. Currently, it is very difficult to sift through the Cacti Forums to find information. We plan on supplementing the current knowledgebase of Cacti information.

Some future tools include:

  • Graph Template Bulk import tool (non-commandline)
  • Data Template Bulk import tool (non-commandline)
  • Data Input Method Creation and Import tool
  • Data Query Creation and Bulk import tool

To access the tools, you must register and then login.  Registration is free.

Visit the forum for questions, comments, recommendations or anything else you want to contribute. The forums are set up for supporting the current tools, but there is room for other topics. Feel free to contribute and join our little community.

We hope you like this site and continue to come back. We want to make this site good and helpful, so please tell us your thoughts.
